Bemis Community Printshop: Collagraphs – Printing from Collage

NEW SERIES! In this fun workshop, students will create a collage with textural 2-D materials and then seal it. Students will then ink and print the design using the printing press. Students can experiment with ink colors as well as different papers to create one of a kind or small edition of prints. Supplies will be provided. Ages 16-Adult

Craft Lab: Dragonfly Sun Catcher

NEW CRAFT LAB SERIES! Join us to learn how to use wire and glass beads to make a sparkly dragonfly sun catcher. You will have 2 projects to choose from and be provided with the knowledge of how to use the tools and materials to make these fun projects.  We will explore creative ideas that will inspire you to keep creating into the future. There is a material fee of $5 due to the instructor on the first day of class. Adults

Partner Wheel Throwing

Join a friend or loved one for a unique night of creative excitement. You and your partner will learn the basics of wheel-throwing on a pottery wheel through this hands-on, guided experience that covers the steps of preparing, centering, and throwing your very own clay vessel to cherish for years to come. Your handmade creations will be clear-glazed and fired for you to pick up about two weeks after your workshop. Supplies will be provided. Adults

Bemis Community Printshop: Block Printed Zines

In this class, students will learn the ins and outs of linoleum block-printing, and will apply those skills to create an 8-page mini-zine that they can share with friends and family. This workshop will span over two classes. In the first class, students will learn how to prepare and transfer their designs and how to safely carve linoleum. There will then be time allotted to start carving. During the second weekend, students will learn how to print, fold, and assemble their zines. Every student will come away with at least ten copies of their zines, and one copy of each other student's zine. Supplies will be provided. Ages 16-Adult

Bemis Community Printshop: Block Printmaking

Please join us for a lively fun day learning how to do block-printmaking. We will be transferring an image to a linoleum block then carving and printing. We will walk away with multiple prints using 1-3 colors. Please bring a sack lunch for 12-12:30 p.m. for a lunch break. There is a material fee of $25 due to the instructor on the first day of class. Wheel Thrown Planters

Join us as we expand our wheel-throwing skills and learn to make our own planters! The core focus will be on standard planters (the planter itself and the plate that holds/catches water) for indoor and outdoor plants. We may delve into other types of planters and techniques such as hanging planters, altered forms (square, pentagonal, and hexagonal), faceting, or anything else you can think of that you would like to try! This is an excellent course for experimentation and broadening your reservoir of abilities. Supply list online. Ages 16-Adult

Sgraffito comes from the Italian word for scratch, so just scratch the surface to reveal your design! Explore the exciting visual and textural possibilities of sgraffito decoration on white clay using contrasting and varied colored underglazes. Learn a cool hack to easily transfer design onto 2D and 3D surfaces. Make a tile, a tumbler or a mug, and a platter with the use of clear over-glazing. Supply list online. Ages 16-Adult

Little Sketchers

Join this fun-filled class designed for budding artists. Each day introduces a new drawing theme through guided lessons, playful warm-ups, and creative projects that help you build confidence and express your big imagination on paper. Frozen Pond Ceramic Glaze

Have fun learning beautiful ceramic glaze possibilities! We will be making hand-built plate forms to glaze in the "frozen pond" method. Fun combinations of glaze colorants will be introduced to complete a set of finished frozen pond- styled pieces. Come learn the technique and share some fun with clay. Supply list online. Wheel Thrown High Fire Pottery

Join us for a unique ceramics experience focused on gas kiln firing at cone 10—a technique many pottery studios don't have access to that creates rich, unexpected glaze effects you won’t get from electric kilns. At cone 10, the gas kiln heats up to 2,350°F. Think copper turns green? In reduction, it fires to brilliant red! Work independently on functional forms like mugs, bowls, vases, and composite pieces while pushing your skills to the next level. Introduction to Oil Painting

We will focus on foundational skills, hands-on practice, and completing at least one finished painting project, while maintaining a manageable pace for beginners. This is your chance to continue working in the darkroom to refine your photographic technique and printing skills. Calling all young animal lovers and creative minds! Explore how to draw and paint your favorite animals while learning the basics of portrait-making in a playful, age-appropriate way. Each day we’ll focus on a different group of animals—pets, wild animals, sea creatures, and imaginary animals! Through guided, step-by-step lessons, you will practice using shapes, lines, colors, and patterns to bring each animal to life. Military Artistic Healing

Military Artistic Healing is designed to support adult service and family members through art creation activities and the Fine Arts Center museum engagement. We aspire to provide a safe setting for each person to participate in whatever way feels comfortable. Watercolor painting techniques and mixed media interventions will be introduced to encourage practice outside of Bemis studio time. Introduction to Jewelry: The Basics

We will introduce you to basic jewelry tools and torches to explore common techniques in jewelry fabrication. You will learn the basics of bezel forming and setting with brass and copper, as well as looking at the potential design benefits of adding and combining stones in your work. We will also learn standard, flush, and raised-head rivets, and how to utilize them as cold-connections in designing your jewelry. You will make multiple pieces for exercises, and at least one final cumulative piece. There will be a break for lunch at noon. Join us in the exciting process of layering and texturing with oil paint. We will be painting your choice of landscape with the use of a vibrant colored underpainting followed by the use of layering textured oil paint with a palette knife. Celebrate National Camera Day with Film Cameras

Learn to use film cameras and different film formats. We will pair camera operations with traditional B&W darkroom practice. Creative instruction will be given so that you can approach your subjects with an eye towards creativity and an understanding of how lighting impacts your personal vision. Basic darkroom instruction will provide you with a hands-on opportunity to process your own film and make prints from the film you’ve exposed to your camera. Supply list online. Ages 16-Adult

Craft Lab: Simple Crochet Coasters

Join us to create a small, crocheted square that can be used as a coaster. All you need for tools are a size 5.5 mm crochet hook, medium weight cotton yarn, and scissors. You will learn how to make the foundation chain and then the body of the coaster with a simple, single crochet stitch. Some fun finishing options will be discussed, and brainstorming is welcome! Collaging: Paper, Plastics and Cloth

Explore new ways to integrate diverse materials layered into hanging collages. Learn to heat fuse soft, paper-like plastics, then apply notions and colorants to create stunning textural collages. Create handmade fabric tissue paper and enhance with beautiful, imported papers and layered Gelli Arts® plate prints made using stencils and stamps. Celebrate Nature Photography Day with Cameraless Photos

Take natural elements from the landscape to make creative compositions that celebrate nature. We will use alternative photographic processes that do not require a camera, however, darkroom chemistry will be used. A brief history of each process will be provided to give you an appreciation of the techniques. We will meet when the UV is high, so bring snacks to tide you over. This beginner-friendly handbuilding ceramics course is for teens who are curious about working with their hands and exploring 3D art. You will learn the fundamentals of hand-building with clay—pinch, coil, and slab techniques—as well as surface design, glazing, and functional vs. sculptural forms. Pinhole Photography Workshop

Create one-of-a-kind images using a simple light-tight container, a pinhole to form an image, and light-sensitive paper or film to record the image. You will learn how to make a perfect pinhole and construct your own camera from simple materials. After a short lunch break (you may want to bring a lunch) we will go outside to photograph with our cameras and then return to the darkroom to develop our images. Supply list online. Ages 16-Adult

Walk away with several colorful mini artworks, plus easy-to-repeat tricks you can use at home to create cards, coasters, and wall art. Explore with us the magic of fusing glass to metal at high heat! You’ll learn basic techniques to prepare the copper; apply powdered glass using various techniques including sifting, stencils, and others; fire the piece; and repeat the process many times, building up layers of colors and designs. Poetry is often best enjoyed alongside a beloved. Wheel Without Words

Discover the meditative rhythm of wheel throwing in this unique, process-focused, silent experience. MagMagic Melts: From Pages to Paper Art

Discover the magical mess of CitraSolv as we use a citrus-based solvent to dissolve and manipulate ink on National Geographic pages, revealing unpredictable, abstract, and textured art papers. You’ll learn safe, playful techniques, spraying, brushing, and dabbing, to soften and bleed images, then peel pages apart to unveil one-of-a-kind papers perfect for collage and mixed media. After creating a stack of “melty” papers, we’ll explore creative ways to use them: cut, weave, paint, stencil, and use as digital photo backdrops. Netted Necklace Ecuadorian Style

Join us to learn how to bead a netted necklace using the Ecuadorian netted method. We will discuss the many different methods of netted stitch, and how they are similar and differ from each other. You will learn how to construct one necklace using size 8 seed beads, a beading needle, and beading thread. You will have the opportunity to learn several different finishing methods, and color combinations. Simply Riveting Stone Pendants

Learn basic riveting techniques and work with a jeweler’s saw and flex shaft to craft and rivet a bale onto a drilled stone, creating simple yet unique brass, copper, and stone pendants. Join us as we learn traditional and contemporary applications of terra sigillata. Terra sigillata, aka terra sig, is a refined slip that is colored with stains and produces beautiful and vivid colors. We will examine both low fire horsehair pottery that is burnished/polished and a design-heavy, modern approach regarding form and surface decoration. We will also learn how to make our own Terra Sigillata for those wishing to learn how to do this. If you wish to do horsehair pottery, you will learn how to apply terra sigillata, a refined slip typically colored with pigments. There are many applications that are possible with this slip, and this is a great introduction to applying this specific technology to our work. World Photography Day: A Brief History of Photography’s Origins

Join us for a presentation to discuss photography’s early days in the late 1700s and the early developments in light sensitivity through the beginning of the 20th century that include Eastman Kodak’s innovations and other contributions to the medium. Participants in this class will learn how to utilize hidden silver surfaces in packaging to create intaglio printing plates. This plate will give you the surface to draw, ink, and copy your unique ideas into multiple prints.
