ArtTrax: Painting II

In addition to reviewing topics in Painting I, this course also covers the basics of acrylic painting including materials needed, color mixing, pigment choice, brush-handling, and palette-knife techniques. Bemis ArtTrax is a new curriculum created to provide equitable and accessible pathways to the arts. ArtTrax courses introduce the fundamental concepts of painting, drawing, and sculpting through a series of engaging exercises. Emphasis is not on producing finished works of art but rather on developing a basic skill set through practice and repetition. No prior knowledge or experience in the medium is needed or expected for level I classes. The courses proceed sequentially, each level building upon what was previously presented. Ages 16-Adult

La Foret – Art and Acting in the Forest

Enjoy an outstanding arts education with instructors from the Fine Art Center’s Bemis School of Art set in the lush forest at the 400-acre La Foret Conference and Retreat Center. Stretch your imagination! Experience a variety of artistic styles and techniques, including painting, printmaking, and mixed-media art while exploring elements of composition and design. Cultivate your acting skills, voice, movement, and characterization with theatre games, mime, and improvisation. Art and acting will come together on Fridays with a special showcase performance and art exhibit for friends and family. Ages 6-11

Colorful Wooden Sculptures

You will learn how to make abstract animals or other wooden sculptures out of wood pieces and gorilla glue. You will learn how to paint your sculptures with tempera paint in colorful patterns, and some history about folk art wooden sculptures. We will explore creative ideas to inspire you and give you the freedom to create more wooden sculptures on your own. Ages 9-12

Animal Portraits

Join us for these after school classes where you’ll get an introduction to learning how to paint your favorite animals or pets, and/or imaginary creatures. We will also explore how to bring character to your animals of choice. You’ll learn about the qualities of both watercolor paints, tempera paints, and several different canvas mediums to paint on. Together we will explore creative ideas that will inspire you and give you the freedom to create your own works of art. Ages 6-9

Acrylic Portrait Painting Inspired by Clarence Shivers

Delve into the Clarence Shivers: Experimenting with Form exhibition, where you can witness firsthand his diverse approach to the art of portraiture. Following this enriching exploration, we will move to the Painting Studio for a hands-on session. Here, you'll have the opportunity to craft your own portrait using acrylic paint on canvas. Through guidance, you'll explore various techniques in portrait composition, delve into the dynamic qualities of acrylic paint, experiment with color mixing, and cultivate your unique artistic style. This immersive experience promises to boost your confidence in portrait painting while equipping you with skills for countless years of joyful and creative expression. Ages 16-Adult

CS1 Let Clarence Shivers Art Influence Your Art

You will evaluate the many artworks of Clarence Shivers an original Tuskegee Airman, with the sole purpose of creating your own art using acrylic paint. You will tour and evaluate Shivers’ art to gain inspiration. You will learn the history of Shivers, what he gained inspiration from, and how his work inspired others. You will use this inspiration to paint a master study of his work. During the second half of this course, you will explore Shiver's abstract paintings and dive into what made him explore this style. You will use the information gathered to create your own abstract painting. This will be accomplished by recreating a master study of Shiver’s work, or by painting something completely new and original. At the end of this class, you will have learned the history of Clarence Shivers, but also how to use that inspiration to create your own unique works of art. Ages 16-Adult
