A134 Introduction to Writing Poetry

Level – Level A – All levels welcome.

Join us as we explore the world of poetry. We will read diverse styles, mostly contemporary, and learn to write our own poems. As we develop our voices, we will use workshop exercises to sharpen our word choice and provide feedback to others. You will leave the class with polished poems of your own and a new appreciation for the art form.

Inspired Postcards

Inspired by Mary Chenoweth, iconic Colorado College Art professor and the woman who carved the wooden doors into Bemis School of Art, let us explore collage through a playful expression of making small postcard-sized art influenced by Mary, Matisse's, and Picasso's work. Gather your stash from travels, or precious papers you have been hanging onto, bring them to the workshop, and transform them into small pieces of art. A trip to the FAC galleries will be included to view the Mary Chenoweth art exhibit. Supply list online. Ages 16-Adult

Wheel Thrown Jars

In this course we will explore the fundamentals of making jars. Intermediate techniques will be learned and implemented, such as throwing off the hump, splitting rims, and creating knobs by trimming or throwing off the lid itself. Three main types of jars will be demonstrated and all three may be made depending on the student's interest; that being: closed form jars, jars with a flange and jars that sit into a split rim. Other techniques and forms may be explored for those wanting to learn more. Supply list online. Ages 16-Adult

Delight in Surface Decoration

Come join the fun of handbuilding ceramic forms for a specific purpose. Slab rolling, extruding, and found forms will be used to build a variety of functioning ceramic ware. The final phase will teach the technique of transferring underglaze images to complete everyone's art piece. After this class is finished, you can set a table full of delightful pieces highlighting your own artistic statements! Supply list online. Ages 16-Adult
