Metal Embossing: Day of the Dead

The fine art of metal embossing or metal relief, known as repoussé or repujado, is the working of metal to give volume and depth to decorative designs engraved on metal and crafted by hand. Your class project will be wrap-mounted tile using aluminum, or, if you prefer, your finished artwork can be on your own traditional frame. Several Día de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) patterns and ideas will be provided. Bring your creativity! Ages 12-16

Get square! Explore the exciting possibilities of building square plates and mugs. Learn to handbuild with soft pre-textured clay slabs using flat patterns that fold up into 3-dimensional forms to create dynamic and self-expressive plate and mug sets. Alternative Techniques in Clay

Throwing on the wheel does not have to be in the round, and the wheel does not have to be used in a traditional way! Learn to rethink the potter's wheel and handbuilding techniques for a unique way to create with clay in this fun-filled workshop-style class. Beginning Wheel Throwing

The potter's wheel! Across the globe, students have been learning how to throw pots for thousands of years. Join in and learn how to make, fire, and glaze bowls, plates, and lots of other vessel forms from wet clay. No experience needed! Ages 9-12

Crystalline Glazes

Learn how to properly make, apply, and fire crystalline glazes while discovering the most attractive forms for these spectacular glazes. This is a fantastic opportunity to advance your knowledge of wheel throwing and glazing in general. Throughout the course, you will become familiar with glaze materials to create original glazes and learn how to load and unload kilns. Join us to create unique, beautiful pieces of pottery! 16-Adult

Introduction to Stop Motion Films

Learn film editing techniques and how to create storyboards, characters, sets, and movement in this introduction to creating a stop motion film. Form your characters with clay, create their sets with found objects, and edit films with basic stop motion software. Students must bring a recording device to capture and edit films. This can be a cellphone, iPad, tablet, computer, or camera. Cellphones and iPads preferred as they are the most compatible with the software that will be used. Ages 9-12

Whimsical Lidded Boxes

Have a blast learning the slab construction process used to handbuild whimsical lidded boxes from pre-textured clay slabs. Move from flat to free-standing using simple measurements and your own mirror image flat patterns. Glazing for textured surfaces will also be taught. These boxes are pure joyful self-expressive whimsy! 16-Adult

Ceramic Flowerpots

Love your plants? Want them to grow in style? Join us to learn to create ceramic flowerpots for your beloved plants. You will use handbuilding techniques such as slabs and pinch pots to create a variety of different flowerpots. Learn to create accessories for your plants, such as drainage plates, watering tools, and décor. 16-Adult

Ceramic Wall Sculpture

In this exciting course, students will learn how to design and create a wall sculpture using mosaic, plaque, and tile-making techniques. Come create beautiful works of art and learn some new tricks in clay with slip, underglaze, and sgraffito methods along with glaze applications. Adults

Pleasing Pitchers

Learn slab construction to handbuild a large, medium, or small pitcher from pre-textured clay slabs with the opportunity to make your own clay texturing tool! Bemis ArtTrax is a new curriculum created to provide equitable and accessible pathways to the arts. ArtTrax courses introduce the fundamental concepts of painting, drawing, and sculpting through a series of engaging exercises. Emphasis is not on producing a finished work of art but on developing basic skills set through practice and repetition. No prior knowledge or experience in the medium is needed or expected. The courses proceed sequentially, each lesson building upon what was previously presented. 16-Adult

Raku Leaf Shadowboxes

This class, for beginning and intermediate skill levels, will teach the basics of the Raku firing process in creating shadowbox wall hangings imprinted with fall leaves. You will finish with matte and gloss copper or crackle glaze before firing your art to hang and enjoy. Tools and materials are provided, just bring your imagination and join the serendipitous fun of the Raku firing process! Adults

Let the Clay Speak

Do you want to learn how to work better with clay and develop more advanced techniques? Then this wheel throwing class is for you! This course is open to intermediate and advanced level students. You will learn new techniques to build more advanced forms with the opportunity to pursue handbuilding, sculptural work, and/or a combination of any of these methods. 16-Adult

Teen Wheel Throwing

Explore a variety of ceramic forms that can be made on the wheel. This class is a terrific opportunity for students with limited time in their schedule to take an art class or for those who wish to expand their art experience. Delve into ceramics in a low-pressure and supportive environment with your peers: no grades, no stress! Instruction is at a beginner level; demonstrations can be tailored to a variety of interests and abilities. Ages 12-17

Sugar Skull Making & Decorating

Learn about the history and meaning behind the popular holiday Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead which originated in Mexico. Participants in this class will help prepare their own sugar skulls and icing for decorating a unique piece to take home. Get creative and expand your understanding of a rich piece of Latin culture. Ages 12-16

Unique Platters and Pitchers

Wow your friends with your own platter and pitcher set that expresses your personal uniqueness! Start with a platter to learn basic soft slab handbuilding using texturing tools and pre-made patterns or create your own pattern. Recon Watchmen Raku Press Mold Masks with Visiting Artist, Virgil Ortiz

Using visual storytelling and sculpture, you’ll learn about the central cast of characters from Virgil Ortiz’s screenplay Revolt 1680/2180 and how they shape the fantastical world he’s creating through clay and multimedia art. Ortiz takes the participants of this workshop on a journey through the processes he used to create his latest characters—the Recon Watchmen. Using a raku clay body, press molds, and as many hand-carved details and embellishments as wanted, you will create your own version. 16-Adult
