ArtTrax: Sculpture III

Bemis ArtTrax is a new curriculum created to provide equitable and accessible pathways to the arts. ArtTrax courses introduce the fundamental concepts of painting, drawing, and sculpting through a series of engaging exercises. Emphasis is not on producing finished works of art, but rather on developing a basic skillset through practice and repetition. No prior knowledge or experience in the medium is needed/expected for level I classes. The courses then proceed sequentially, each level building upon what was previously presented. Ages 16-Adult

Ceramic Sets

In these two sessions, learn some new techniques and get creative with a variety of handbuilding methods. Make a set of wares that will be a functional memento. Make ceramics to serve drinks, snacks, or whatever you choose! Adults

Hinged Clam Jar

Wow everyone! Create an exotic and functional, ceramic, hinged clam jar by combining the use of throwing and hand-building techniques. Throw two bowl forms that are joined lip-to-lip like a clam, cut the lid, add clay hinge components and decorative elements. This project lends itself to carving, sgraffito, and sculpting in an abstract or organic design. We will also be glazing this hinged/lidded form. Ages 16-Adult

Tantalizing Textured Mugs

Explore slab construction to handbuild tantalizing mugs from textured clay slabs. Build mugs that have three or four feet or build four sided full-bodied forms using fold up flat patterns. You’ll leave with a unique creation ready for your favorite beverage! Ages 16–Adult

Clay Sculpture

Build any form you like out of clay in this mini course. Sculpt a ceramic piece of art using non-traditional and traditional techniques while honing your unique style. Learn to intuitively sculpt and challenge your skills to make a one-of-a-kind ceramic sculpture. Adults

Handbuilding Large Forms

In this mini-class, enjoy making a handbuilt clay form using large building methods and molds. Make a classical vase form or an ornament for your garden — anything goes in this fun weekly course! Learn sgraffito, underglazing, and pen-line glazing, in addition to how to make hand-formed ceramic vessels. Adults

Pinch Pot Creations

Create a ceramic piece with your own hands! Learn basic techniques on how to form your pinch pot creations with clay. After you’ve created your piece, you will learn how to customize it with carving and painting techniques. Each creation as unique as its maker! Ages 6-9

Whimsical Lidded Boxes

Explore slab construction to handbuild whimsical lidded boxes from textured clay slabs. Move from flat to free-standing using simple measurements and your own handmade flat patterns. These boxes are pure joyful self-expressive textural whimsy! Ages 16–Adult

Animals & their Environment

This course will be a study about some animals who are impacting their environment and others that are being impacted BY their environment. After we learn a bit about animals we will create plaster sculptures of them using newspaper, tape, and plaster strips before bringing them to life with paint. Get ready for a wild time! Ages 6-9

Art Around the World

Would you like to be inspired by art from regions other than our own? This class explores several techniques from different cultures and countries across the globe —painting/sculpting animals, tangled drawings, dot designs, and stamped hieroglyphics. Make art while you learn about other art processes from around the world. Ages 6-9

Ceramic Jewelry

Make stylish jewelry and adornments out of clay in this workshop. Beads, pendants, attachments, and ideas on how to connect the forms will be covered while learning about the magical medium of clay. Ideas on how to connect the ceramic pieces using findings, wire, and leather will be presented, along with glazing and under-glazing techniques. Adults

Get Out of Round! Wheel Thrown & Altered Bowls

Don’t be bored with round, get out of round! Alter, cut, carve, and stamp your bowls. Make your own clay stamps and learn to throw basic bowl forms in preparation for each type of alteration process. Staining and glazing will be taught to suit this project. Wow everyone with your own unique, functional clay art serving pieces! Ages 16-Adult

3D Sculpture Design

In this course, we are all free to let our imaginations soar! 3D sculpture design is a unique and exciting way to explore your creative side using traditional and non-traditional art methods and materials. Take your ideas to the next level from concept drawing designs to 3D sculptures. With polymer-based clay, the possibilities are close to limitless! Ages 9-12

Beginning Wheel Thrown Pottery

This class is an introduction to wheel throwing methods of working with clay. Learn to create forms such as bowls and mugs, as well as decorating and glazing your finished pieces. Explore your own ideas on the wheel and use hand-building techniques to enhance your work. Ages 12-16

Decorated Plates, Tumblers, & Bowls, Oh My!

Working from templates, learn to handbuild and decorate a plate, tumbler, and bowl. After your pieces have been fired once, they will be decorated with underglaze transfers to reflect your personal artistic statement. Colors, patterns, and designs are determined by each individual. Join the fun, learn a new decorating technique, and make some clay art! Adults

Just Scratching the Surface! Sgraffito in Clay

Sgraffito comes from the Italian word for scratch, so just scratch the surface to reveal your design! Explore the exciting visual and textural possibilities of sgraffito decoration on white clay using contrasting and varied colored underglazes. Learn a cool technique to easily transfer design onto 2D and 3D surfaces such as a tumbler and a platter. Look at wood or linoleum block cuts and prints for your textural design inspiration. Ages 16–Adult

Let the Clay Speak

Do you want to learn how to work better with clay or develop more advanced techniques? Then, this is the class for you! This course is open to intermediate and advanced level students. You will learn new techniques to create more advanced forms. You will also have the opportunity to pursue handbuilding, sculptural work, and/or a combination of any of these methods. Ages 16-Adult

Papier Mache Mask Making

Familiarize yourself with traditional masks from different regions of the world and build your own decorative mask. Using a mold and papier mache, we'll construct the mask on day one, paint on day two and add embellishments on day three. Ages 12-16

Teen Wheel Throwing

Explore a variety of ceramic forms made on the wheel with your peers. A great opportunity for students without enough time in their schedule to take a summer art class or for those who wish to expand their arts experience. Delve into ceramics in a low-pressure and supportive environment: no grades, no stress! Instruction is at beginner level, projects and demonstrations can be tailored to a variety of interests and abilities. Ages 12-16

Building Bowls, Cups, and Mugs!

Using templates, a slab roller, and extruded clay slabs, learn different hand-building practices to make drinking and serving vessels. Once built, we will explore different techniques for texture, then staining and glazing to finish your work. Serve, drink up, and enjoy! Adults

Wheel Throwing

Build on your basic knowledge of throwing and further your technical understanding of clay. More complex functional forms, refinement of throwing skills, advanced decorative and glazing will be demonstrated. This class will review and critique fired results to foster the development of personal style. Ages 16-Adult
