Ceramics: Plot Twists

This three-hour workshop will investigate the relationship between two-dimensional and three-dimensional surfaces, while focusing on the expressive narrative potential of physical objects. During the workshop the participants will create compositional drawings, then hand-build a small ceramic object, which they will paint and glaze. The instructor will demo some hand-building techniques, discuss the conceptual brainstorming approaches, as well as demo working with underglazes and glazes. 16-Adult

CS1 Let Clarence Shivers Art Influence Your Art

You will evaluate the many artworks of Clarence Shivers an original Tuskegee Airman, with the sole purpose of creating your own art using acrylic paint. You will tour and evaluate Shivers’ art to gain inspiration. You will learn the history of Shivers, what he gained inspiration from, and how his work inspired others. You will use this inspiration to paint a master study of his work. During the second half of this course, you will explore Shiver's abstract paintings and dive into what made him explore this style. You will use the information gathered to create your own abstract painting. This will be accomplished by recreating a master study of Shiver’s work, or by painting something completely new and original. At the end of this class, you will have learned the history of Clarence Shivers, but also how to use that inspiration to create your own unique works of art. Ages 16-Adult

Acrylic Portrait Painting Inspired by Clarence Shivers

Delve into the Clarence Shivers: Experimenting with Form exhibition, where you can witness firsthand his diverse approach to the art of portraiture. Following this enriching exploration, we will move to the Painting Studio for a hands-on session. Here, you'll have the opportunity to craft your own portrait using acrylic paint on canvas. Through guidance, you'll explore various techniques in portrait composition, delve into the dynamic qualities of acrylic paint, experiment with color mixing, and cultivate your unique artistic style. This immersive experience promises to boost your confidence in portrait painting while equipping you with skills for countless years of joyful and creative expression. Ages 16-Adult

Carnival (Summer Music Festival Class)

Students will create illustrations for the presentation of The Carnival of the Animals at the Colorado College Summer Music Festival. Drawing skills are required as well as a love of making art. We will focus on creating the cast of joyful animal characters inspired by Camille Saint Saens musical composition. A roaring lion, a kangaroo wearing pajamas, a stately swan, and squealing donkey are a few of the fun-loving characters we will create. While the orchestra performs the musical composition and a narrator reads the story, the student's illustrations will be shown on a screen for the audience to view. This is a unique opportunity for young creatives and their families to enjoy. Ages 8-12

Collage: Printed, Stamped, Woven

Join us for a unique collage experience where you will piece together large ripped watercolor papers and form abstract shapes. You will design your surfaces with Gelli printing, stamping, paints, pastels, inks, stains, and more. We will weave, perforate, layer, and adhere wallpaper and other unique found paper with our prepared papers. Adults

Pet Portraits

Bring your insight and creativity to reveal the character of your pet that photographs alone cannot. We will work from photographs and use your choice of familiar medium. Expect plenty of examples and learn techniques for accurately transferring your photo to your art surface. Ages 16-Adult

Moments That Matter: Intro to Phone Filmmaking

Create cinematic films that you love, featuring the people you love… on your phone. In this class, you’ll learn how to shoot and edit short films that will become treasured family heirlooms, all while spending more time enjoying the moment and less time looking at a screen. Please bring lunch to enjoy during our breaks. Adults

Animal Portraits

Join us for these after school classes where you’ll get an introduction to learning how to paint your favorite animals or pets, and/or imaginary creatures. We will also explore how to bring character to your animals of choice. You’ll learn about the qualities of both watercolor paints, tempera paints, and several different canvas mediums to paint on. Together we will explore creative ideas that will inspire you and give you the freedom to create your own works of art. Ages 6-9

Colorful Wooden Sculptures

You will learn how to make abstract animals or other wooden sculptures out of wood pieces and gorilla glue. You will learn how to paint your sculptures with tempera paint in colorful patterns, and some history about folk art wooden sculptures. We will explore creative ideas to inspire you and give you the freedom to create more wooden sculptures on your own. Ages 9-12

Dragon Drawing

If you like mythological characters and fantasy art, then you won’t want to miss this course on dragon anatomy drawing! In this class you will learn about the designs of various kinds of dragons, how the different parts of the body are formed with shape and structure, as well as techniques using different mediums to make your dragons look three dimensional. You will leave this class with a better understanding of how to bring your own fantasy to life! Ages 9-12
